The island of Mljet – Croatia is one of the Southern Dalmatia islands. It stretches parallel along the eastern half of the Pelješac peninsula and is separate from Mljet by the 8 km wide Mljet Canal. It is the most forested island in the Adriatic. Truly one of the most beautiful pearls of the Mediterranean. Untouched nature, the island’s rich forests are ideal places to research the rich flora and fauna. So, the olive groves and rolling vineyards also add to peacefully enjoy the pristine beauty of the natural surroundings.
Mild Mediterranean Climate on Mljet
The characteristics of the Mediterranean climate are apparent at Mljet. With its dry, sunny and very warm summers, and rainy but mild winters. As a result, Mljet receives a wonderful year round climate. A majority of rainfall coming near the end of fall and in the start of winter, for example. It is an island of lush Mediterranean vegetation, clear and clean sea, picturesque bays and rich sea life.
Mljet National Park makes up most of the island. There are several villages, two salt water lakes – Veliko and Malo jezero, and a Benedictine monastery St. Mary on the island.

Preserved from the Illyrian period, there are many fortifications and tombs. The best preserved for example, are those on the hill of Veliki Gradac, Veliko jezero and the fortress at Vodice, above the water source at Vodice at Babino Polje. The Roman Palace, which is the largest after Diocletian’s Palace in Split and the Arena in Pula, is a part of the valuable heritage of the island of Mljet.
Mljet – Dalmatia – Croatia continues to manage to preserve its natural origins and authenticity thanks to its geographical location and the fact that it is separate from land. Sea, strong waves, sea currents and wind formed the structure of the Mljet coast as we know it today. Filled with bays, caves, steep coves and rocks. The island was formed by rising from the sea, so it only forms part of the land from which it is separated. The sea around the coast of Mljet is warmer and saltier than it is in the north of the Adriatic.
