Torpedo Station – Rijeka : The torpedo factory appeared on the city’s economic map as a result of Rijeka’s Giovanni Luppis’ idea of a defensive weapon against enemy ships, called the “savior of the coast”. Luppis dealt with the idea at the beginning of the 1860s, without enough technical knowledge and means for realization.
The story will take a happier direction when fellow citizen Robert Whitehead, director of the Rijeka Technical Institute, takes an interest in it: based on Luppis’ idea, Whitehead develops a solution similar to a metal fish, which moves under the sea surface. The prototype, tested in 1866. The factory later transformed into the R. Whitehead & Co. Torpedo Factory in 1875. It is the world’s first Torpedo Station – Rijeka – Croatia.
