Bokar Fortress – Dubrovnik – Croatia is situated opposite the St Lawrence fortress and is separated from the walls. It serves to defend the city from possible danger from the west. Bokar has some other roles – to defend the entrance, gate to the city, Pila.
The construction of the Bokar fortress begins in 1461. Following the design of one of the best builders of the time – Florenace native Michelozzo. The construction lasts more than a hundred years. The final result is yet another impressive circular fort in Dubrovnik’s defense crown.

It is almost a cliché to say that Bokar is one of the most beautiful forts of Dubrovnik. Its intended role was the defence of the Pile gate. It stands high on a natural outcrop with the sea washing against the rock below. Michelozzo also designed this impressive building. Building began in the 15th century, in 1461 to be precise, and apart from some improvements to the roof in 1570 the Bokar fortress has stood through the centuries just as you see it today.
Among many other Game of Thrones locations, the Bokar Fortress features in Season 2: Tyron and Lord Varys stand on the ramparts looking out to sea while planning the defense of King’s Landing.
