After that, the castle was damaged by an earthquake in 1750, Austrian field-marshal Laval Nugent bought the ruins and restored it.

The Franciscan Monastery at Trsat is now an important cultural centre that attracts pilgrims from around the world. The 10th of May is the most significant pilgrimage day. But there are many others throughout the year, including the 15th of August, when Trsat is pedestrian zone only and filled with pilgrims. The monastery is home to a treasure trove of historical artefacts, including a 16th century statue of the Virgin Mary, a 14th century painting of the Madonna, and a 15th century Gothic statue of Our Lady of Slunj above the altar.

In Addition, the most spectacular way to approach Trsat Castle, Rijeka is via the Petar Kruzic Stairway, a series of 538 stairs that lead from Rijeka to the top of the hill. The stairway is adorned with chapels dedicated to saints and was begun by Captain Petar Kruzic in 1531. It was later expanded and became known as the “Pilgrim’s Way”.
