St James’ Cathedral – Sibenik – Croatia, is the most significant monument in Sibenik. Known in European architecture and listed as a world heritage site of UNESCO dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. Five generations were working on that building for more than a hundred years. Creating as a result, the perfect proportions and the impression as it is cast out of one piece. Firstly, the St James’ Cathedral is the only one such building in Europe constructed entirely of stone quarried from the islands of Brac, Korcula, Rab and Krk. Secondly, it is the world’s largest church build completely of stone without brick or wooden supports. However, the structure is also unique in that the interior shape corresponds exactly to the exterior.

Creation of St James’ Cathedral in Sibenik, Croatia, lasts over 100 years:
Dalmatinac is not the first architect to work on the cathedral. Construction began in 1431, but, after 10 years of trying with various Venetian builders, the city appoints Dalmatinac. Zadar native, increases the size of the building and transforms the conception of the church into a transitional Gothic – Renaissance style. The unusual domed – roof complex is completed after Dalmatinac’s death by Nikola Firentinac. He continues the facade in a pure Renaissance style. It is all finally completed in 1536.
The St James’ Cathedral – Sibenik – Croatia, most unusual feature is the frieze of 71 heads on the exterior walls at the rear of the building. For example, these portraits almost appear to be caricatures but are depictions of ordinary 15th-century citizens.

The Lion’s Portal on the northern side, with two lions that support columns of the figures of Adam and Eve. In addition, they appear to be embarrassed by their nakedness.

St James’ Cathedral, and the Renaissance Town Hall, the surrounding churches and palaces form one of the most beautiful squares in the Croatian urbanistic heritage.
